We do so many things well in America, but reducing waste is typically not one of them. And I’m a firm “waste not, want not” person, thanks to my grandmother repeating that so much when I grew up. I generally hate wasting things (time, money, food) and so do the Danes.
Scandinavians have a lot of secrets to reducing waste (some easier than others), but I’ve really enjoyed the small fridge approach. I know this is popular across Europe, but it’s so foreign to us Americans.
My fridge is maybe 2X the size of a mini fridge, and it’s honestly everything our family currently needs (thankfully, we have a deep freeze in our basement, too). It really is true that when you buy less and more frequently, you will waste less. And I love that it only takes me a few minutes to clean out the fridge, and I can see everything we have in a quick pass.
In summary: Long live the little fridge!
