My husband and I have gotten into this bad habit lately, where every few weeks (or maybe more often, if I’m honest), we pick up individual slices of cake form a local grocery store.
First, you must understand that we both LOVE cake.
And our love for cake was reignited when we tried Whole Foods birthday cake for my bday in January. It was so buttery and moist, and the buttercream icing was just buttery enough and to die for.
So, we started getting the occasional cake slice from WF…and then we found some a little bit cheaper and just as good at another local place (Harris Teeter). I also got hooked on their German chocolate cake.
If I look at the long-ingredient list on the side of the box again, I’ll probably break my habit. But, in the mean time, we enjoy our little treats.
It’s even more of a heartwarming treat when it’s homemade — we all know that.
So, do your self a favor, and use this simple and delicious recipe from the kitchn Cookbook (which is fabulous by the way) for Yellow Cake with Double Chocolate Icing the next time you’re tasked to bake a birthday cake or just have a craving.
It’s so worth the time and effort and is much more economical than buying individual cake slices.
