There are times for watching TV and eating pizza at home…and there are times to get out explore and learn new things.
A few weekends ago, I roped my sister (who was actually excited about it, too) in to going to a few farms on the Eastern Triangle Farm Tour.
Although we just went to a few nearby, it was great to visit some farms, learn new things and get more connected with the wonderful farmers around us.
This was our first stop and one of the most interesting. We got to learn a lot about hydroponic farming- and we got to see some beautiful heads of Bibb lettuce (some of which you can buy at your local Whole Foods here in Raleigh). At this farm, which is right off of Holly Springs Road, they also grow tomatoes hydroponically, and they have a farm stand with lots of veggies and other local goodies like meats, cheeses and honey.
Here, we got to hear more about the trials and triumphs of organic gardening. Double T Farm farms for their CSA (aka local produce box) and is in Clayton, NC.
It was so fun to end our little self-guided tour at In Theory Farm, which was basically like a big petting zoo. We got to pet a goat, a Guernsey cow, a horse, pigs and chase chickens around their peaceful farm property.
I hope there are other instances to explore more farms in the area, and I hope you can find such opportunities in your neck of the woods, too!
