People are always asking how to eat better, cook more and live healthier.
While I don’t have all the keys to those things, I do know that seasonal eating can help you in each of those areas.
When you eat what’s being grown in your area, you’re getting food that’s fresh, lasts longer and is tastier.
And when you’re presented with rows and rows of juicy, red strawberries, how hard is it to jump right in?
In North Carolina, the strawberries are growing like crazy these days, and they’re so much sweeter with a deeper flavor than the grocery store plastic container ones.
We even have places, like Porter Farms, that will let you pick berries and get them while they’re a little bit cheaper and fresher!
My sister and I picked a hot Saturday to go picking, but we came home with loads of berries, plucked by our own hands. (I also got some hives for about an hour from the strawberry leaves, but it was still worth it.)
I’ve been munching on some of the berries, made an individual strawberry crisp and froze a lot to use throughout the next few months.
It’s a blessing to live in an area where there’s fun things like strawberry picking to do, and where locals are getting involved in their food and enjoying the freshness that the earth has to offer.
Come back on Thursday to see a fabulous summer strawberry recipe that’s sure to make your mouth water!
