Random Acts of Foodness: Clothing Edition

Today’s good news about food is a little different. Although it’s not directly linked to food and eating, we’re talking about one of our other basic needs in life, clothing, and how to buy clothing with a conscience and support great causes all at the same time.

I might have already mentioned a few of these on my Gift Giving post, but I think they’re worth mentioning again. And the new year is a great time to start shopping well and making a good impact with your purchases.

Take this Slavery Footprint quiz to see how many modern-day slaves you employ. This is such a wake-up call to see that sometimes when we’re looking for the cheapest-made thing, we are really hurting the people of the world more than we’re helping them.

Here are some companies that I’m really excited about what they’re doing to help us shop smarter:

1. Everlane: I just got my first basic tees from Everlane and love the good quality and fair price. They offer classy basics and give you information on where the clothes are made, who is making them and what their work conditions are like.

2. JOYN: I can’t even express how amazing it is what this company is doing to empower artisans in India and put out quality and unique products. And the founders are from my home state and dedicated to honoring God by improving lives and making great things. Speaking of JOYN, they’re apart of the TOMS Marketplace which is a wonderful place to shop while making a difference.

3. fashionABLE: I love what this company is doing and the absolutely gorgeous scarves that they are making.

4. Stitchfix: You may have heard about this company that delivers a box of clothes picked by a stylist just for you. Stitchfix is all about shopping well and finding nice pieces that will last in your wardrobe.

5. H&M: I’ve always enjoyed shopping at H&M when I’m in bigger cities that have one and I’m proud of the commitment that they’ve made to improve wages for their factory workers. I definitely hope they will stick to this vision and I’m a consumer who is willing to pay a little more to help others have a better life with more dignity.

I know there are hundreds of more companies doing wonderful things and would love to hear about them if you’d like to leave a comment with your favorite smart-shopping company!

Happy Monday!
