Thinking Fruitful: 5 Ways to Waste Less Food

The other day I ran across this article about what people around the world are doing to help our food waste problem.

It’s really awesome that people are finding ways (and new technology) to get food that would be wasted to people who really need it.

I definitely want to keep an eye on these projects and do my part to waste less food.

Here are 5 ways that I use (and will get better at using) to waste less food:

1. Meal Plan

This is a BIG one! Make a plan for what you will eat each week, so you know exactly what to get at the farmers market and grocery store. Stick to your list, and just get what you need for this week. Or if you shop more often, just get what you need for that day or few days.

2. Plan for Leftovers

When you’re making your meal plan, keep in mind when you will have leftovers and work them into other meals. Even if you don’t plan it out, when you have tasty leftovers from a night or so ago, be sure to use them before they go bad.

3. Eat at Home More

You can much better control how much food you waste when you’re in your own kitchen. Make your own meals much more than you eat out to lessen waste (and stay healthier).

4. Use Your Fruits & Veg

When you pay good money for the best fruits and veggies to cook with, actually use them! This comes back to the whole meal plan thing, too. Buy only the produce that you know you’ll be using in the next week or so.

5. Clean Out Your Pantry

I have found that I waste less and keep on budget when before I make my meal plan, I take a look through my pantry and fridge and use all that I can from there. If I’ve got rice, stir fry goes on the menu, and if I have meat, I’ll be sure to use it ASAP.

How do you waste less food?
